All individuals have needs that they strive to satisfy, either by using the system, ‘acting on the fringes’ or acting as a reformist or revolutionary. Given this condition, social systems must be responsive to individual needs, or be subject to instability and forced change (possibly through violence or conflict).” [1] On last Saturday morning I was sitting in my TV lounge and playing with the remote control, I don’t know why but I suddenly stopped at a Channel, where a very smart young anchor lady was conducting a show somewhere in public place at Karachi. She was saying that yesterday she conducted the same program and collected Rs one million as a charity for a 10 year old boy who is suffering from a disease and requires Rs 2.6 million to recover. She was confident that she will manage the required amount in her current session. She was surrounded by a crowed all were contributing to her cause in their own capacity, a man brought four chocolates for the boy and on asking he said that he lives in interior Sindh and he works on daily wages here in Karachi earning approximately 250 rupees a day, his daughter lives in Sindh and she likes these chocolates that is why he brought the same for the boy. An elderly lady handed over the handful amount to the anchor person and on asking why she is donating such a huge amount and the lady had no words to express her but her eyes were filled with tears and her face was full of emotions. I felt motivated by the end of the program as she collected the desired amount and the treatment of the boy was promised by various individuals. Perhaps the motivation of this kind of charity results from following verses of the Qur’an, which highlight the importance of charity and generosity in general: ·          Those who spend in charity, whether in prosperity or adversity, who restrain anger and pardon people; for God loves those who do, [and are] good to others [3:134] A comprehensive concept of sacrifice, charity and generosity is given by Holy Quran. ·          “It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces Towards east or West; but it is righteousness- to believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity; to fulfil the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah-fearing.” [2] On another channel, another young energetic and handsome anchor was shouting on the way people work in public offices. He was pointing out the act of misconduct and the way the office barriers deals the public affairs causing unnecessary delays, raising unrealistic objections, asking for bribes and doing other jobs during their official hours of work. Butchers are busy in sealing meat of dead and sick animals. Milk is sold with everything included but the milk, life saving drugs are available with expiry dates, doctors are busy in treating the patients with animal drugs, national leaders are defending their fake degrees and not paying their tax returns and utility bills, loan defaulters are justifying their non payments. School buildings are used for storage of wheat, ghost schools and ghost health care units are in abundance . Country is facing massive energy crises but no one is willing to support the need of constructing new dams. Car snatching, target killing, kidnapping for ransom and bomb blasts are in routine.   Airline, WAPDA, railways, industry is at the verge of collapse. Doctors, lawyers, students, teachers, workers are on strike. All these social evils are quite regretfully taking their roots in our society and undermining the foundations of our beloved country.         I felt ashamed in viewing the presence of all the social evils in my society. I see a polarized society all around with social, economic injustice, sectarianism, intolerance, terrorism, poverty, hunger, illiteracy and adultery. The country was created on the name of Islam, while Islam teaches the Amar Bil Maroof, Haqkul Ibad . The social evils present today in our society were present in the social life of Arabs before the prophet. It was the teaching of our beloved Prophet that had developed a sense of belonging, unity and fraternity in the sectarian society of Arab. ·          Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The faithful, in their love for one another and in their having mercy for one another and in their kindness toward one another, are like one body; when a member of it ails, all (the parts of) the body call one another (to share the pain) through sleeplessness and fever." [3]   The Prophet (S.A.W.A.W) wanted to reform all those evils according to the Islamic scheme but the method HE (S.A.W.A.W) opted was not a revolutionary one. Rather, it was what may be called, an evolutionary method. Establishing a Society Based on Justice The Holy Prophet founded a society in which the people should practice justice and treat others without any consideration of caste, creed, political or economic differences. The Prophets' main function was to inculcate in the people's heart a firm belief in Allah and the Day of Judgment and to create in the individual and the society such moral standard and Divine thinking as would arouse in them the spirit of justice and equity towards their fellow beings. The Holy Qur'an says: ·          We sent Our Messengers with clear evidence (to support their truthfulness), and sent with them the Book and the Balance (criteria of right and wrong) so that people would maintain justice. We sent down iron, in which is a vital war material and which benefits the people, so that Allah would know who would help Him though unseen, and His Messengers. (Surah al-Hadid, 57:25)   At another place, it is stated that ·          "The example of the person abiding by Allah's order and restrictions in comparison to those who violate them is like the example of those persons who drew lots for their seats in a boat. Some of them got seats in the upper part, and the others in the lower. When the latter needed water, they had to go up to bring water (and that troubled the others), so they said, 'Let us make a hole in our share of the ship (and get water) saving those who are above us from troubling them. So, if the people in the upper part left the others do what they had suggested, all the people of the ship would be destroyed, but if they prevented them, both parties would be safe." [4] In an article “charitable Pakistan” the author presenting a view that “Pakistan has an incredibly vibrant civil society, with 200,000 people volunteering their skills full-time in 2004. Studies also show that individuals donate significant contributions to non-governmental organizations. The informal nature of Pakistan’s financial system is reflected in charity as well, thus many informal donations are not accounted for in the data. South Asian cultural values of responsibility for family and community may also account for a high number of donations to individuals. As Imam Ali says If the wealth had belonged to me even then I would have distributed it equally among the people but this wealth belongs to Allah and is meant for distribution among the people and therefore everybody has his right in it.   Finally, other factors such as anonymity also explain why most estimation under predict the total amount of donations given by Pakistanis each year. Even though the overwhelming majority of Pakistanis live at or below the poverty line , generosity is the norm, and it is not uncommon to see a poor person sharing common resources with someone of a higher economic status. So regardless of whether or not the mainstream media reports it, Pakistan will continue to be a country of generosity. Charitable Pakistan:   [5] Social responsibility is an ethical entity or theory that , be it an organization or individual, has an obligation to act in benefit of society at large. Social responsibility is a duty every individual or organization has to perform so as to maintain a balance between the economy and the ecosystem. A trade-off always exists between economic development, in the material sense, and the welfare of the society and environment. Social responsibility means sustaining the equilibrium between the two. It pertains not only to business organizations but also to everyone, whose action impacts the environment. This responsibility can be passive, by avoiding engaging in socially harmful acts, or active, by performing activities that directly advance social goals. [6] It is unfortunate that even after more than half a century of independence; we are still gripped by a number of deadly social evils. Only through effective moral and social education of the people and the establishment of true political, economic and social system based on high moral principles can we bring social evils to an end (Pakistan Times 6 Aug 2011). The Maslow’s theory of need is best suited to the sinusoidal behavior of Pakistani citizens; according to Maslow’s theory all humans have needs that must be met. These needs are often never explored by the average person, the person who performs their daily activities and habits with no reflection on why they do these things. The psychologist Abraham Maslow was determined to figure out why people behave in certain ways. The result of his search was a five part hierarchy of needs that attempts to explain human behavior. The five parts of the hierarchy are, in this order, basic, safety, social, self esteem, and self-actualization. It is the collective responsibility of the state and the individuals to bring evolutionary changes in the society and the first two levels of the Maslow’s theory relates to the state’s responsibility while the remaining levels can be achieved by the individuals.   Basic Needs Basic needs are defined as physiological needs that must be met before a person can focus on any other aspect of their life, such as a social life. These needs are those required for sustenance: water, air, and food are several examples. If an individual is lacking one of these, their behavior will be aimed at obtaining them, whatever the cost. Once the need is met, the need will cease to motivate the individual. The majority of Pakistanis people are struggling for their basic needs like water, shelter, food, health and educations. Safety Needs The next level of the hierarchy is safety needs, which do not become motivating goals until the basic physiological needs are met. Safety can be required at the workplace like the job security, seniority, pensions, hospitalization, and security in day-to-day life. In Pakistan the people caries a fear to be unsafe while they travel to work, attend the public meetings, visit market, and go to schools and colleges. This sense of insecurity generates frustration and they act in an evil way, show anger, adopt shortcuts and adulteration. Implicitly these all acts of evils they are doing to secure their future, perhaps.          Social Needs Once the safety needs of an individual have been met, he or she can move onto the next level of social needs. This is defined as the need for love, affection, and a sense of belongingness in one's relationships with other persons. Humans are inherently social and friendly creatures, and to deprive this need for affection will prohibit the individual from obtaining a higher plateau on Maslow's hierarchy. Due to the current wave of uncertainty in the society and the presence of terrorist activities, people avoid social festivals. In early days people used to enjoy attending festivals, outings, get to gathers, concerts, exhibitions, Eid-Millan parties etc. Now-a- days, these gatherings and festivals are confined to the closed walls where entry is very restricted.   Research has shown that the social gatherings and friendship increases the morale of individuals and the morale of the society. Self Esteem Needs After the needs of safety have been recognized and achieved; a person can pursue the needs of self esteem. This plateau is defined as the need for the esteem of others; respect, prestige, recognition, need for self-esteem, personal sense of competence and mastery. Even if we start appreciating people around us for a job well done, as every human wants to be praised or start greeting them with a smile or start giving right to express one’s feeling, the bulk of this need will be fulfilled. The Quran address this as “ Everybody is the servant of Allah and to treat everyone with love and affection becomes the source of Allah's pleasure and the best man is he who is the best well-wisher of others ”. SO the tolerance is the key here. These little gestures of kindness will promote the culture of motivation, quality of life in the society. Self-Actualization Needs The last level of Maslow's hierarchy, the pinnacle of achievement, is the plateau of self-actualization. The goal of self-actualization is hard to define. The concept offers a variety of interpretations, because it differs based on each person. But if the above four levels are injected in the society the individuals will start feeling to achieve self actualization in their areas of responsibility. According to the Quran, “And We inspired the soul with knowledge of evil and piety. Those who purify their souls will certainly have ever lasting happiness and those who corrupt their soul will certainly be deprived of happiness.  [7] When we try to analyze the prevalent situation of our society we come across the fact that our government has drastically failed to provide the basic necessities of common people. The aim of creation of Pakistan was to practice the Islamic law and to have an Islamic welfare society which seems to be a false dream now. Anarchy and frustration in society reflects the botched law and order situation of our society. But what I feel is not an end in itself. We cannot give up hope; we cannot turn out the lights of our hearts, we cannot turn down our efforts for better future.   Until and unless we feel that we are one nation, one society and one body. Can we have a prosperous, peaceful and progressive Pakistan? The pessimist will say no or it’s impossible. But the optimistic mind will reply which I can say in the words of Shelley: “The trumpet of a prophecy1 O Wind, If winter loves, can spring be far behind?” [1]     Roger A.Coate and Jerel A.
